The outstanding achievements of the category winners and commendees of the Nursing Standard Nurse 2008 Awards were celebrated at a prestigious ceremony at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden on Thursday March 27 2008.
Maura Buchanan, President of the Royal College of Nursing, described the winners and commendees as "inspirational" and praised their unfailing dedication, determination and commitment to improving the care and treatment of their patients. The ceremony culminated with former health minister and Trustee of the Patients Association, Edwina Currie, announcing the Nursing Standard "Nurse of the Year 2008".

Patient's Choice Award
Rachel Andrews, a Paediatric Sister at the Eye Treatment Centre, West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds and Gill Donovan, a Breast Cancer Nurse Specialist at Velindre Hospital in Cardiff, are the joint winners of the first ever nationwide Patient's Choice Award.
