Medication is an essential part of most patients' care plans and nurses have a key role to play in administration. This role includes liaison with prescribers and dispensers, education of patients / carers and other healthcare professionals, accurate documentation and the safe storage / disposal of medications. In addition, nurses who are responsible for medication administration look for ways to improve both patient safety and adherence to the prescribed medication, for example a patient with stroke-related dysphagia will find swallowing medication a challenge.
This award will be given to the nurse who can demonstrate how improvements have been made to enhance any aspect of best practice in medication administration.
